Did you know that there is a quick and healthy way to make olive oil popcorn?
You have probably at some point wanted to make movie theater popcorn at home. But of course, most kitchens don’t have a powerful popcorn machine like the ones found in shopping malls. Well, this post will open a world of possibilities for you. All you need is olive oil, a pot with a lid, popcorn kernels, and a secret ingredient.
Today we are going to learn about the endless possibilities of making popcorn at home.
Here’s a quick preview of today’s recipes:
- Salted popcorn
- Sweet popcorn
- Rosemary popcorn (and much more)
You will quickly realize that the recipes are very similar. However, by adding a few special touches, we can make delicious corn creations. Here are 3 different options for making popcorn. Which is your favorite?
Making popcorn with olive oil
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup popcorn kernels
- 5 Tbsp Italica extra virgin olive oil
- Salt to taste
Directions
This recipe is as simple as drizzling 5 tablespoons of Italica extra virgin olive oil in a pot. Next, add half a cup of popcorn kernels and cover the pot with a lid (not completely, but leaving a small gap between the lid and the upper edge of the pot). Raise the heat and wait for the “popping” sounds to stop.
Remove from the heat, add salt and mix well to coat all the popcorn.
That’s it!
Sweet olive oil popcorn
For this version, we will make some homemade caramel to achieve that consistency of sweet popcorn we love so much.
Ingredients
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
- A pinch of salt
- 1 Tbsp butter
- Assorted food coloring
Directions
Make the popcorn as instructed above and set aside to cool while you prepare the caramel.
Add the water and sugar to a large pot, and place it on low-medium heat until it begins to boil. Keep a close eye on the sugar as it caramelizes, making sure it doesn’t burn.
While the mixture is still boiling, add the baking soda and salt, and stir well. Once everything has been thoroughly combined, lower the heat and add the butter.
Divide the caramel into several bowls and add a few drops of food coloring. Then, divide the popcorn and mix each color with a bowl of popcorn. Stir thoroughly until all the popcorn is coated with a layer of caramel. Finally, mix all the popcorn together and stir.
Rosemary olive oil popcorn
Rosemary olive oil popcorn is perhaps the chicest recipe in today’s post. Although this technique is relatively unknown, it’s delicious and easy to prepare. Simply make some popcorn following the original recipe, but instead of adding salt at the end, sprinkle the following seasoning on top:
Ingredients
- 1 Tbsp salt
- 2 Tbsp fresh rosemary, finely chopped
Directions
Place the two ingredients in a mortar and mix well. Add the popcorn and stir thoroughly.
*Chef’s tip*
This last version is easy to customize. Simply substitute rosemary with the dried herb of your choice: basil, pepper, garlic powder, paprika, etc. You can even use curry powder!
